6 Great Directors Who Went From the MCU
It is common knowledge that every MCU show, be it a series or a film, is generally highly anticipated by fans from all over the world. This is what ultimately made not a few Hollywood actors and filmmakers compete to work with Marvel Studios as part of the MCU. But it turns out that despite the difficulty of selecting to be involved with the MCU project, it turns out that there are a number of directors who have actually given up their golden opportunity. Starting from veterans of MCU shows, to new filmmakers, here are Hollywood directors who have decided to leave the MCU!
Patty JenkinsThor: The Dark World
Did you know that before becoming famous as the director of Wonder Woman in the DCU cinema universe, Patty Jenkins actually had almost worked on Thor's second solo film, The Dark World (2013). However, three months after his announcement as MCU director, Jenkins left the project because he "wasn't sure he could make a good film with the script Marvel Studios wanted." To replace him, Marvel then appointed director Alan Taylor to continue the Thor sequel film until it was finally released. Even so, in the end Taylor also admitted that he was not very satisfied with Marvel's direction which was quite strict.
Edgar Wright – Ant-Man
Long before the release of the Ant-Man (2015) film, in 2006 Marvel Studios had announced that director Edgar Wright was part of the first Ant-Man film project. However, two months before production began, Wright suddenly decided to leave, the reason being that Marvel preferred a new script over the one he had previously written. In just a short time, Marvel immediately found a replacement for Wright, namely director Peyton Reed. Reed is currently working on three solo Ant-Man films, including his third film Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania which will be released on February 17.
Scott Derrickson – Doctor Strange 2
Scott Derrickson is a Hollywood director who has successfully worked on the first Doctor Strange film (2016). Where he has made many fans more familiar with the wizarding world of Marvel and its iconic characters. Unfortunately, even though Derrickson was appointed to direct the sequel entitled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), at the beginning of 2020 he decided to leave the MCU project for classic reasons, namely creative differences. As we know, his position was replaced by director Sam Raimi, who had previously succeeded in the Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007) and the Evil Dead horror franchise.
Ava DuVernay – Black Panther
Before Ryan Coogler made the Oscar-winning film Black Panther (2018), director Ava DuVernay actually had serious talks with Marvel Studios to direct the film. But in the end he decided to leave the MCU director chair even before it all started. Although it was never officially announced, he once said "it's better for me to realize it early, than to feel the creative difference later." Fortunately, the same does not apply to Coogler, because recently he has returned to success in his film sequel, Black Panther Wakanda Forever (2022).
Bassam Tariq – Blade
Even though currently Marvel Studios is still developing the Blade film which will star Mahershala Ali, it was announced last year that the film had lost its first potential director, namely Bassam Tariq. According to Marvel, Tariq left as director of Blade due to a shift in production date. So he reluctantly decided to step down, even though he was still involved as the executive producer of the film. Two months later, Marvel then partnered with new director Yann Demange to work on the film with a script written by Michael Starrbury. The film itself is scheduled to be released in 2024.
Jon Watts – Fantastic Four
After successfully working on the first Spider-Man trilogy in the MCU, director Jon Watts was actually scheduled to work on the Fantastic Four reboot film which is planned to be released in 2025. Many fans were quite enthusiastic about this announcement, until finally Watts himself stated that he chose to leave the highly anticipated MCU film project. According to him after seven years working on Spider-Man, he needed time to take a break from superhero films. Currently, the Fantastic Four film in the MCU is planned to be worked on by WandaVision series director, Mark Shakman.
