A series of the best and most popular animated films in 2022
2022 has presented some of the best new animated films which are quite busy. Even though it's not the best year compared to previous years, there are enough titles for us to include in the Cultura Best 2022. Starting from 3D animated films that still dominate, the best anime films, to the return of the stop-motion trend on streaming platforms.
Competition in the animated film scene this year is not too tight. There are at least one or two titles that are very clear that they will dominate the awards in early 2023. The following is a list of the best animated films according to the Cultura Best 2022 version.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers
Not a remake, not a reboot, "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" is the new chapter of these two iconic Disney squirrels. Set in the present day, it turns out that Chip and Dale are no longer partners in the world of entertainment. Lives among humans and other cartoon characters in Los Angeles.
When their old friend mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale and other old friends return to adventure together. There have been quite a number of animated films being watched by production houses this year. And “Chip ‘d Dale: Rescue Rangers” only releases on streaming platforms when it should have had the entertaining points it deserves to hit the big screen.
Animated films with a hybrid concept like this (combining the world of live action with various types of animation) are now unusual. But the latest film 'Chip 'n Dale' has elements of nostalgia for many audiences and is presented with an exciting new adventure story.
Turning Red
It was surprising to learn that “Turning Red” got a Disney+ release for its premiere. When compared to other Pixar films, this film has the same quality as "Inside Out", "Luca", and other new titles in this animation studio.
Set in 2000s Canada, Meilin is a 13-year-old boyband boy who is going through puberty. One day he wakes up as a big red panda and is only able to turn back into a human when he manages to control his emotions.
Talking about the diversity and adaptation of western foreign culture that Disney has been trying for several years, “Turning Red” is one of the best.
The concept and medium as a whole looks maybe not as grand as "Mulan" or "Raya an the Last Dragon", but the quality of the script contains a memorable story for audiences across generations. Especially those of us who grew up in Asian families with the stereotype of upholding respect for our parents.
The Sea Beasts
It's also a shame we can't watch “The Sea Beast” on the big screen, because the animated film has evocative visuals. Set in the life of a monster hunter on the high seas, Jacob Holland begins to question his path in life after going on an unexpected adventure with a little girl who wants to be just like him. Many compare this film to "How to Train Your Dragon".
In several aspects of the script and its visual execution, "The Sea Beast" does provide excitement through its animated panoramas, especially in its captivating opening scene. Shows how Jacob acts together with his crew. Even though you can't watch it on the big screen, at least this film will be more fun to watch on a wider screen than just a PC screen.
Bubbles
There are several anime film releases that we should also include in this list. “Bubble” is the most anticipated animated film in the first half of 2022. Especially since this film is directed by Tetsuro Araki, the artist behind the popular anime name “Attack on Titan”. Then there is Takeshi Obata as the famous character designer through "Death Note". The name Wit Studio is another big point that has aroused the curiosity of anime film fans.
“Bubble” may elicit mixed reviews. There are those who acknowledge its quality, but not a few also think that this anime film is mediocre.
The script of “Bubble” is not the best, but it is neat enough to become an art medium that is more pleasing to the audience's senses. “Bubble” is an animated film that prioritizes an immersive audio and visual experience. For those who have expectations of the parkour edition of "Attack on Titan", this film actually presents very satisfying action visuals.
Drifting Home
Another of the best anime films released on Netflix this year is "Drifting Home". This anime by Hiroyasu Ishida is in the fantasy adventure genre. Natsume and Kosuke are told to play in their childhood apartment which is about to be destroyed. After a big rainstorm, the two of them along with other friends were trapped in another dimension, sailing on the open seas.
Even though it has references to Japanese culture that may not be familiar to all of us, “Drifting Home” can at least remind us of our possessive attitude towards childhood memories. It's hard to leave the old house, to remember innocent friendship.
Not only is the story of his friendship touching the heart, "Drifting Home" also contains survival sequences and thrilling action. As well as visually appealing even though most of them only spend time in the same building. Without realizing it, we will also feel affection for Natsume and Kosuke's childhood home.
One Piece Film: Red
"One Piece Film: Red" is also the most anticipatory animated film that all fans have been waiting for on the big screen this year. This anima film involves big names like Eiichiro Oda, Goro Taniguchi, and Tsutomu Kuroiwa on the bench as director and scriptwriter.
Coming with a semi-canon plot, the 15th film of 'One Piece' takes the audience in the story of Uta, a famous singer from the Elegia Kingdom, Luffy's childhood friend. An interesting aspect of 'One Piece Red' is the dominance of the musical elements that fill the duration of the film.
Adapting to the theme of music through its representation, this film also presents an action that blends perfectly with musical elements. Making this one anime film feel fresher when compared to other 'One Piece' films.
Belle
“Belle” is a fantasy genre anime film produced by Studio Chizu. Inspired by “Beauty and the Beast”, it tells the story of a teenage girl who has another life in a virtual universe as a famous idol singer named Belle. Mamoru Hosoda wants to present a script that is relevant to the lives of young people in today's virtual world.
Overall, what makes "Belle" clear is the visual presentation and concept of the "U" universe. Then it is filled with various beautifully presented soundtracks. “U” is the best soundtrack in this film, composed by millennium parade, and sung by Kaho Nakamura who is the voice actor of the protagonist, Suzu Naito, Belle's true identity.
Pinocchio
Closing the end of the year on a sweet note, “Pinocchio” by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson is the best animated film of 2022. While we have been let down by the live-action “Pinocchio” on Disney+ by Robert Zemeckis, this Netflix Original release is a far-fetched antidote. better quality.
At this point, the fairy tale of this wooden doll boy has been adapted many times. We can see how del Toro really fell in love with the story of Pinocchio to make creative modifications without losing the deep essence of the story. Together with Mark Gustafson, "Pinocchio" with a darker, gloomy, yet touching nuance was successfully realized.
