Get to Know the Elseworld Concept in DC

The concept of Elseworld adapted from DC Comics was officially introduced by James Gunn and Peter Safran as part of the DC Universe they built. As geeks know, Warner Bros. and DC Studios is currently trying to rebuild a new cinematic universe that is different from before. With the emergence of this new cinematic universe, they are also trying to present a new concept.

The new concept is Elseworld. This latest concept has actually been given hints of its appearance since last December by James Gunn. However, it is only now that Gunn has finally confirmed this. Maybe, there are some geeks who are still confused about what Elseworld is. And here is an explanation of the concept.

Elseworld at DC Comics

Then, what is Elseworld? Elseworld in DC Comics is an alternative reality concept in which many epic events occur outside the main continuity, aka outside the main comic universe. The concept of Elseworld or what is commonly referred to as “Imaginary Stories” first appeared in 1989. By presenting this concept, DC Comics gives its writers freedom of imagination.

They are given the freedom to present a variety of new and fresh ideas or can also present various events that occur outside of what has been presented in the main universe. In the history of DC Comics, the Silver Age of Comics era was the period that presented the most Elseworld stories. Two characters that often appear in Elseworld stories are Superman and Batman. However, there are also the Justice League and other characters that have appeared in Elseworld.

DC Comics introduced a similar concept similar to Elseworld in 2018 under the name DC Black Label. In this concept, DC Comics presents a much more mature storyline, more explicit images, with a darker and darker tone and storyline.

Elseworld DC Universe Version

The big surprise then appeared at the end of 2022 yesterday, where DC Studios plans to use the same concept for the big screen version of the story. James Gunn, as one of the top officials at DC Studios, had given instructions regarding this matter. However, just yesterday, James Gunn finally confirmed that in the future he would apply the same concept to the DC Universe.

James Gunn explained that the Elseworld concept is applied to distinguish between storylines that occur in the main DC universe and those that occur outside it. According to Gunn, Matt Reeves' The Batman and Todd Phillips' Joker are the two films that have been confirmed as part of Elseworld in the DC Universe. This is because both of the films are outside the continuity of the DC Universe.

What about the main universe? According to Gunn, the films that have been included in the project plan for the next 10 years will become part of the main universe of the DC Universe. For example, Creature Commandos, The Brave and the Bold, Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and so on. For now, not much is known about the Elseworld plans built by James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, Gunn seems confident and has prepared everything carefully for this concept.

Elseworld Profits For DC Studios

Even though DC Studios has made the DC Universe their top priority, they will still pay close attention to Elseworld's stories. One of the big advantages that can be taken from the introduction of this concept is that the production house can more easily present various multiverse concepts in the future.

We can see a real example of this from Elseworld which was applied by The CW with their Arrowverse. The Elseworld concept has proven to be very effective in presenting the multiverse formula in these various TV series. In fact, what's epic is that they can present one of the biggest crossover stories, namely Crisis on Infinite Earths, where it is told that the entire DC multiverse is under threat of destruction due to the actions of the Anti-Monitor.

This is also what DC Studios can try to apply later with the Elseworld concept. On the other hand, Elseworld can also make DC Studios clearer and easier to provide a label system for their various productions. For most viewers, of course, it will be easier and more profitable when they know which films or TV series are part of the DC Universe and which are not.

For example, with the Elseworld concept, the audience can know that The Batman and Joker franchises are not part of the main universe of the DC Universe. Even though many fans are skeptical about the Elseworld concept, because DC Studios is more exposed to the solo or standalone stories of the characters, it is certainly interesting how they will try to explore Elseworld elements in the future.

Elseworld's goal

For now, as explained in the previous point, James Gunn still hasn't provided detailed information about the Elseworld concept. This includes not explaining what DC Studios' goal is to present Elseworld. However, geeks can of course have guessed clearly what their target is with this which is none other than doing a crossover in the future.

If The CW's Elseworld can be the benchmark, then DC Studios might be able to do something similar or even bigger and more epic. One of the classic stories from Elseworld that many fans hope will appear in the big screen version by James Gunn is Kingdom Come. In his own social media, Gunn has given hints that he will present his story in the future.

Presenting the Elseworld multiverse concept will certainly be a new breakthrough in DC history on the big screen. And of course they can learn from their previous mistakes, which makes the multiverse concept less appealing to audiences. With the joining of James Gunn and the emergence of this new concept, hopefully there will be something extraordinary that will satisfy the fans even more. Let's just wait, geeks, for further news from these various Elseworld projects.
