"Malvada" closes the year of Mexican cinema with a romantic comedy that mixes fantasy, which signifies the debut of José Manuel Cravioto in the genre and of a new generation of actors, including Michelle Renaud, as well as the incorporation of themes such as ecology.
The film, which hits theaters today, stars Giselle Kuri as Fernanda, who along with her brothers Pato (Alex Fernández) and Tato (Manuel Calderón) embarks on an adventure to save her ex-boyfriend (Giuseppe Gamba) from Laura's spell (Michelle Renaud), whom he is going to marry.
"They have offered me everything, comedy, terror, drama or melodrama, in 10 years I have read a number of scripts with proposals and Malvada stayed there, until we transformed it into a fairy tale from Mexico City," says Cravioto.
For the filmmaker, and for Kuri, the leading lady, it was important to discover that there was also a message about authenticity and feminism in the script.
“They pigeonhole us. As a woman they tell you: don't do this because they're going to think badly of you, or behave like that because if you don't, men won't take you seriously; They put you in a little box”, says the actress.
"Fer and Laura are a reflection of this problem because they told one of them: 'hide from who you are because society will judge you' and the other: 'if you fall in love, they will hurt you' and the message is to dare to be you without taking others into account”, he adds.
To play Daniel, the actor Guiseppe Gamba became a vegetarian and approached the foundations that protect the vaquita, while Michelle Renaud, who plays Laura the witch, approached her spiritual side, with meditations and stories about the topic.
This is Renaud's film debut after a 20-year career, so she expects her role to be emblematic.
"We live in a fantastic world where reality is often stranger than fiction and there are many Mexican witches who will feel identified, men with values that will be reflected and proud to be who they are because there are many people who have been blocked by society" says Renaud.
José Manuel Cravioto took 10 years to decide to make a romantic comedy.
The Mexican filmmaker behind movies like Olimpia and series like Sr. Ávila calls himself a consumer of this genre of cinema but had never dared to direct it.
“I felt alienated, as a spectator it was fine to see them, but as a director I said: 'perhaps I wouldn't make them', because there are people who are modest in some way with an intellectual aspect, not me, it seems to me that I am insulting the films with that word , then one day I said: 'why wouldn't you do them? If you love them,' recalls Cravioto in an interview.
The director was spellbound
The script for "Malvada" came into the director's hands by chance a decade ago, proposing the story of a couple that separates and after a while, his mother contacts her to ask her to help prevent her son from falling apart. married a witch
The esoteric theme, very Mexican-style, encouraged Cravioto to enter the genre.
“We are very stimulated by these awards that directors from all over the world win, with very serious auteur cinema, in a very solemn tone, it is never a comedy or a horror film, they are always very hard, sour themes and also made for certain elites in the world, but I did not feel so familiar with that, but with the possibility that a comedy transmits a number of elements that speak of my city, my friends, my people, my family, like the characters in Malvada, that are more defective and meet and create a common good”, explains the director.
The film, which also has Anabel Ferreira and Mercedes Hernández in its cast, was filmed in Mexico City, and according to Alex Fernández and Manuel Calderón, who play Pato and Tato, they sought to reflect young city dwellers.
“We see more real characters and with different aesthetics. Suddenly, residents of Narvarte dressed very similar to the characters would pass by and we played that”, recalls Calderón.
