Review Alpha Lantern, the Deadly Version of Green Lantern

Faithful readers of DC Comics, surely know that all Green Lantern superheroes cannot be separated from the existence of the Green Lantern Corps which was created by the Guardians of the Universe. The Green Lantern Corps itself is a justice enforcement group whose territory is as wide as the universe. This is what ultimately requires each of its members to become one of the strongest beings in the galaxy. But did you know that within the group itself there is an elite team that is stronger than the Green Lanterns in general, they are the Alpha Lantern Corps. How great is that? Let's talk.

Deadly Version of Green Lantern Corps

First made his debut in the comic Green Lantern Vol. 4 #27 (2008), Alpha Lantern Corps is described as an elite team that has merged itself with the Green Lantern Corps' Central Power Battery. It all happened not long after the headquarters and the entire Corps were destroyed in the big event of the Sinestro Corps War. In order to revive the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe decided to add some rules that allow Alpha Lanterns to use lethal means while enforcing the law in the galaxy.

Because Alpha Lanterns are the highest honor in the Corps, not many Green Lanterns can become members. In its history, the Guardians have appointed at least six members to become Alpha Lanterns, they are Boodikka, Chaselon, Green Man, Kraken, Varix, and John Stewart from Earth. However, because John disagreed with Alpha Lantern's rules which allowed its members to act brutally, he finally chose to resign. While the remaining five members agreed to become the Elite Green Lantern team as the Alpha Lantern Corps.

The main mission of these Alpha Lanterns is to hunt down the naughty or defected Lanterns, not only Green Lanterns but also all Lanterns that exist in the DC Universe, including Sinestro Corps, Red Lantern Corps, and so on. Not infrequently Alpha Lantern's task requires them to hunt down and disarm the Power Ring from their colleagues in Green Lantern. This is what ultimately makes them feared not only by other Lanterns but also by their own group. Their motto is "No Lantern Can Escape Alpha Lanterns!"

Have Unlimited Power

It's not strange if Alpha Lanterns claim to be superior to any Lanterns, because becoming a member requires enormous sacrifices. Where Alpha Lantern members have to leave all their personal lives behind and start devoting themselves fully to the Corps. Not to mention that if they want to join the Central Power Battery, they must first perform a cosmic operation by removing most of their old body parts. This ultimately allows the energy of an Alpha Lantern's Power Ring to be unlimited and never run out.

With unlimited energy, you could say Alpha Lanterns have superior strength than ordinary Green Lanterns. Because in general they can be better in all aspects, including flight speed, physical strength, immunity, stamina, and the ability to manifest willpower in the form of green energy from their Power Ring. Unfortunately, even though it was not explained in detail by DC, the Alpha Lantern Corps has a fatal weakness that is often told in the comics. Where they are always described as easy to control, including by supervillains.

Alpha Lantern Existence Now

After its debut, Alpha Lantern Corps has appeared quite a few times in the big DC saga. Sadly, their appearance often becomes a disaster for the DC Universe. For example, in the events of the epic Final Crisis (2008), where they are successfully controlled by Darkseid's henchman, Granny Goodness. Then the same thing happened in Blackest Night (2009), instead of protecting the DC Universe from the zombie Black Lantern army, they actually became another threat. Likewise in the events of Brightest Day (2010), when the supervillain Cyborg Superman is said to have managed to control them.

In his last story, Alpha Lantern is even told that he has the heart to sentence John Stewart to death for killing a fellow Green Lantern member who wanted to reveal the secrets of the Central Power Battery. Fortunately, at the last second, Alpha Lantern Varix realized what he was doing, so he chose to finish off the other Alpha Lanterns with the help of John Stewart and Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Ashamed of his team's actions, Varix then took his own life, before finally all the Alpha Lantern bodies were stored in the basement of the Green Lantern Corps' new headquarters.
